Meet the people that make Bruce & Bruce

Silvio A. Rodia Sr., MS
President

Silvio joined Bruce & Bruce in 2017 after a 17-year period at another Chicago based actuarial consulting firm.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics from DePaul University.

Silvio has spent his entire career as a consultant primarily servicing fraternal benefit societies.  He has extensive background in financial reporting, policy administration, cash flow testing, risk management, and policy form filing.

He is an avid baseball fan and loves to take road trips across the USA with his wife and 3 children.

Jonathan B. Rhoda, ASA, EA, FCA
EVP - Retirement Plan Consulting Actuary

Jon joined Bruce & Bruce in January 2021. He is a strategic advisor in the administration and financial reporting requirements that govern employer sponsored retiree benefit programs. Jon has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from South Dakota State University. He is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) and an Enrolled Actuary (EA).

Jon and his family live in the Denver Colorado area where they enjoy skiing and hiking and the great outdoors.

Beth Pestka
Treasurer/Secretary - HR

Beth is Bruce & Bruce's longest-tenured employee. She joined Bruce & Bruce in 1993, taking over the bookkeeping position her mother had held for many years.  She has a bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University.  Beth’s role has expanded over the years to include HR, form filing and development.

Beth loves to travel and has especially enjoyed cruising over the past 10+ years.  Together her and her husband have 5 children, 2 grandchildren.

Robert Dennison, FSA, MAAA
Consulting Actuary

Robert joined Bruce & Bruce in 2020, bringing expertise in risk management, asset liability management, and reinsurance, and an enthusiasm for helping clients understand their business and thrive.  He has extensive experience in life, annuity, and health products.  Robert is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.  He holds degrees in English and Math from Ohio State University. Outside work he plays soccer as much as he can.

He also loves painting, traveling locally and to faraway places, and discovering new spots to hike and bike.    

Vladimir G. Krepkiy, FSA, FCIA, MAAA, CERA
Consulting Actuary

Vlad joined Bruce & Bruce in 2018, bringing expertise in pricing, modeling, experience studies and risk management.  He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA), a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA).   Vlad holds a bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Mathematics from the University of Manitoba.

He enjoys the challenge of finding creative ways to help our clients recognize value and achieve their goals and objectives.

Kathleen Lawrence, FSA, MAAA
Consulting Actuary

Kathleen joined Bruce & Bruce in January 2020.   She started her career at Milliman, where she garnered fourteen years of consulting experience.  Her technical expertise includes life insurance modeling with an emphasis on traditional products.  Kathleen earned her mathematics degree with a concentration in Actuarial Science from DePaul University, graduating Summa Cum Laude.  She earned her FSA in 2000 and MAAA in 1994.

In her free time, she enjoys singing and previously spent eight years performing with the Chicago Master Singers.

Kelly Bretz, FSA, MAAA, CFA
Consultant

Kelly is a seasoned professional and trusted advisor to the insurance industry for 40 years. Throughout her career, she has held the position of Chief Risk Officer, Director of Enterprise Risk Management, and served as a Board Member for various committees (such as executive, finance, and governance committees). She has extensive experience in creating, enhancing and leading enterprise risk management programs including: intelligent analysis methods, strategic risk management, business continuity plans, disaster recovery plans and polices, vendor management, and corporate insurance. Kelly has also held executive leadership positions for product development, including creating product discipline, formal development and management process, product roadmap and co-ownership of product positioning.

Phil Deon
Senior Data Analyst

Phil graduated from the State University of New York, College at Potsdam with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. Throughout his career, Phil has specialized in constructing, challenging, and refining actuarial models. He enjoys working on small teams where he has been exposed to underwriting, mortality research, pricing, administration, and financial analysis. A tinkerer at heart, Phil has proven to be a helpful hand and offer a great perspective.

Phil and his young family of six live in the snowbelt of Lake Ontario in Northern New York. He enjoys getting lost on trails with a pair of snowshoes, debating over a strategic board game, and a quick trip to one of the many vineyards in the Thousand Islands region.

Denise Martin
State Filing Analyst

Denise joined Bruce & Bruce in November of 1999 as we were trying to prove to state departments that our clients were all "Y2K prepared".  She came to Bruce & Bruce after managing the back office of a securities broker-dealer that was a dominant force in the financial planning arena in Chicago’s North Shore.

Denise has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and frequently misses the mountains but can’t bear being away from the Great Lakes!
